What is the Ladder?

It's a list of players in order. You can make challenges to the person above you and if you win, you can take their position!

Joining the Ladder

Play a ladder game at an appropriate place, and if you win a game, you get a position there.

Ladder Challenges

Once you have a spot on the ladder, you can challenge the player above you. If you beat them, you switch places with them, or if there was a gap, the gap gets smaller. You can play multiple challenges in one night, and the change in position takes place as soon as the game is over. Ladder games can be played with clocks or with free time; if clocks are available, if either player wants to use clocks then they should be used. The time setting should be something reasonable - most games should finish within 60 or 90 minutes.

Board sizes - you can play on the board size you are used to. Since the ladder spans the whole club, I think it's reasonable that board sizes will progress from 9x9, to 13x13, and then to 19x19 for most of the games.

Moving up the Ladder

Here is how to find out your handicap in a ladder game:

For example, if there are players
and B challenges A, they will play a 2 stone handicap game where A plays white, and white wins ties. If B wins, the gap shrinks to one. If A wins, it grows by one.

Ladder Photos

Send me a photo and I'll add it.

Not playing the ladder

This is fine - ladder is totally optional. Even if you do play the ladder you can play anybody in the club as a free game. And if want your picture removed, just send me a message and I'll take it down.

Have fun!
